Pair of Broadway actors vacation at Wailea resort

There was glee galore when Emmy nominee Matthew Morrison, who stars as Will Schuester in Fox’s "Glee," took in the exquisite "Te Au Moana" luau show beachfront at the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa over the Labor Day weekend. Morrison, who co-starred as Lt. Cable opposite our Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary in the just-shuttered "South Pacific" at Lincoln Center, is a frequent Island visitor, so not surprisingly, he got up on stage to dance with the Tihati troupers. Hotel g.m. Bill Countryman turned gleek with a photo op with Morrison, outside the Mala Wailea restaurant. …

Also houseguesting at the Marriott: Morrison’s Broadway pal, Marissa Jaret Winokur, who earned a Tony as Tracy in "Hairspray," in which he played deejay Link Larkin. She was holidaying with hubby and baby. …

And that was Paris Hilton schmoozing and shopping on Maui with b.f. Cy Waits — presumably carrying her own purse. …

MATCH-UP: Sen. Daniel K. Inouye and his wife, Irene, recently dropped by Iolani on Kona Street, the new boutique of Iolani Sportswear, and walked out with matching his-and-her aloha wear. Playing tourists? No, the senior Hawaii senator and the late Keiji Kawakami, founder of the Iolani label, served together in the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat "Go for Broke" Team during World War II, so the senator’s bond with the Kawakami ohana lingers. Thus, Inouye also supports Manoa DNA, the group featuring Keiji’s son Lloyd (Iolani president) and Lloyd’s musical sons Nick and Alex. …

Speaking of Manoa DNA, its "Evolution" CD release party Sept. 4 at Kani Ka Pila Grille at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach attracted a couple hundred folks who heard tracks from the new release, along with a stream of guest musicians, like Herb Ohta Jr., Jon Yamasaki, Kamuela Kahoano, Kapala and Roy Sakuma‘s ukulele keiki. …

JAZZ, ANYONE? Michael Paulo, who debuted his new CD with David Benoit and the magenta Symphony Orchestra at his periodic "Smooth Jazz Nights" Sept. 4 at the Royal Hawaiian Theatre, also is an impresario of jazz, and will next stage the first JW Marriott Ihilani Pacific Rim Jazz Festival from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Ihilani Resort, where he will be joined by Hiroshima, Pauline Wilson, Bobby Caldwell, Rick Braun and dad Rene Paulo, too. …

ITEMIZATIONS: For the first time in recent memory, Manoa Valley Theatre has double-cast one of the roles in its season’s opener, "The Honky Tonk Angels," now in production. Reason: Pro singer Anita Hall, playing one of the three country voices in the montage of diva classics, had some previously committed singing dates, so Lisa Konove will do some alternate singing and acting. Marcelo Pacleb, who is choreographer of the University of Hawaii Warriors Dancers, has been juggling time and energy since he also is choreographer of Paliku Theatre’s just-opened production of "Once on This Island." Pacleb also is multitasking, helping with costumes and hair for the energetic Caribbean-beat musical. …

HERE ‘N’ THERE: CBS is sparing no expense to promote "Hawaii Five-0," with billboards and subway, bus and taxi ads to raise awareness in Los Angeles and New York. Aside from TV spots, there’s less hype here (Honolulans get the first peek at tomorrow’s "Sunset on the Beach" premiere, a week before the network debut) but the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is offering a "Hualalai 5-0" package (rates from $625) that includes DVDs of the original series, assorted resort credits and other perks.
