Wie to play in Dubai to end season

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates » Hawaii golfer Michelle Wie will end her season by playing in the Dubai Masters, the final Ladies European Tour event of the year.

Tour officials announced yesterday that Wie will be in the field at the $642,330 event Dec. 6-11 at Emirates Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates.

The 20-year-old American, who finished runner-up in Dubai last year, has improved five spots to No. 7 in the LPGA Tour rankings after winning the CN Canadian Women’s Open last month. She finished second Sunday in Arkansas.

UH’s Danielson is player of the week

University of Hawaii junior outside hitter Kanani Danielson, the most outstanding player of last week’s Verizon Wireless Challenge, was named Western Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week yesterday.

The Kamehameha alum led the Rainbow Wahine to the tournament championship with wins over San Diego State, UC Irvine and Saint Mary’s. Danielson hit .331 with 5.40 kills, 2.70 digs and 0.80 blocks per set over the three matches.

She opened the week by hitting .516 with 19 kills against San Diego State, then hit .429 with 15 kills vs. UC Irvine. She closed out the week with a double-double, posting 20 kills and 12 digs in the championship match against Saint Mary’s.

Danielson leads the WAC with 4.83 kills per set on .323 hitting this season.

This is her seventh WAC player of the week honor in her career.

Hagemayer takes PacWest honor

Brigham Young-Hawaii sophomore outside hitter Lauren Hagemayer was named Pacific West Conference volleyball player of the week yesterday.

Hagemayer led the Seasiders to a 2-1 record last week.

She knocked down 39 kills over the three matches to average 3.90 kills per game for the week. She hit .360, served four aces, and put up six blocks.

McCain earns PacWest soccer honors

Brigham Young University Hawaii freshman goalkeeper Megan McCain, who held the nation’s 17th-ranked Division II team scoreless last week, was named the Pacific West Conference soccer player of the week.

McCain saved 11 shots in a double-overtime scoreless tie with national power Seattle Pacific last Wednesday. It was the second shutout of the season in as many games for McCain. Seattle Pacific has been picked as the preseason favorite in the Great Northwest Conference.

HPU’s Aspnas is runner of the week

For the second straight week, HPU’s Frida Aspnas was named PacWest runner of the week.

The senior from Sweden finished fifth overall at the BYU-Hawaii Invitational in Laie, first among PacWest runners. Aspnas finished with a time of 18:34 in the 5K race, with HPU earning a fourth-place finish.
