No. 2 Stanford blows out Hawaii

The Hawaii women’s soccer team suffered its worst loss in the history of the 17-year program in a 9-0 defeat at No. 2 Stanford yesterday.

The Cardinal (7-0-2) scored three times in the first 10 minutes and didn’t look back, posting UH opponent records for goals in a half (five) and a game.

"Quite frankly, not much (we could do), because they were so good," UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "They moved the ball around very efficiently, very fast, and got behind our defense again and again."

Christen Press, the top scorer in the country, netted two shots, as did Lindsay Taylor. UH (2-8) was outshot 33-3 in losing its fifth straight match, including being shut out in its last four contests, another dubious school record.

UH plays at Pacific on Sunday in the Rainbow Wahine’s final match before the start of Western Athletic Conference play on Oct. 1.

The Tigers (2-4-2) defeated UH 1-0 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in both teams’ season opener on Aug. 20.

"I think we should manage that game; we’ve seen them before," Tenzing said. "The trouble is their field is very small, and they play man to man, so it’s going to be a tough game."

Fujikawa 2 shots off lead

Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa is two shots out of the lead going into today’s final round of the eGolf Professional Tour’s CFAC Classic.

The 19-year-old Moanalua High School graduate shot a 5-under-par 67 yesterday at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, N.C. Fujikawa is tied for fourth with a 36-hole total of 11-under 133.

Former PGA and Nationwide Tour player Jason Caron leads at 131, after shooting a 65. Caron has three eagles in the first two rounds.

Fraticelli added to UH staff

Carl Fraticelli was added to the Hawaii baseball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

Fraticelli was head coach of the Hawaii Ali’is in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League since 2006. He’s a graduate of Kalaheo High School.

‘Iolani hires new water polo coach

Brennan Shum has been named the new girls varsity water polo coach at ‘Iolani, replacing Ian Kusao, who relocated to the mainland.

Shum previously coached the boys’ water polo team and at Mark Keppel High School in California. He played at Southern Cal in the mid 1990s.
