Hawaii QB Moniz in sync with receivers
Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz has slotback Kealoha Pilares’ back.
And also the backs of the other slotbacks and wideouts in the Warriors’ read-and-attack offense.
"Moniz is something else," said Pilares, whose Warriors play Louisiana Tech tonight. "I don’t know how he does it. He’s a receiver-friendly quarterback, if that means anything. He kind of sees formations from a receiver’s standpoint."
One of the Warriors’ plays is PoCo — originating from a choice of post or corner routes — in which the receiver makes a break based on the defensive coverage.
"We’re reading the defense, and Moniz is reading me," Pilares said. "The coverage has maybe three routes we can run. Depending on that, (Moniz) can read my body language. Just from that, he knows where to throw."
In last week’s rout of Charleston Southern, Pilares made two scoring catches on PoCo plays. Moniz made the throws while looking at Pilares’ back.

"It’s a sixth sense," Moniz said. "I developed an ability to read their body language, read their routes. I must have seen them run a million routes from last year to now. I have to read the defense, too."
Moniz has been preparing for tonight’s reading hour. Here’s a closer look at the teams:
