Umlauft lifts UH men’s volleyball

Jonas Umlauft put down a combined 58 kills to help the Hawaii men’s volleyball team to two five-set victories yesterday in the Can-Am Challenge in Alberta, Canada.

Umlauft, a sophomore opposite, had 25 kills and senior hitter Joshua Walker added 18 as the Warriors rallied past Calgary 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10. Umlauft had 33 kills and junior hitter Steven Hunt 13 in UH’s 28-26, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory over Manitoba, the defending Canadian collegiate champion.

Hawaii (3-0) concludes the tournament today against host Alberta (1-1).

 

Cal Baptist joins PacWest

California Baptist University has been accepted as the 10th member of the Pacific West Conference and will begin competition with the 2011-12 athletic season.

The nine current members include four from Hawaii — Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo. The other members are Academy of Art University (San Francisco), Dixie State College (St. George, Utah), Dominican University (San Rafael, Calif.), Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Notre Dame de Namur University (Belmont, Calif.).
