Warriors finish second at Can-Am

Hawaii sophomore opposite Jonas Umlauft and senior setter Nejc Zemljak were named to the all-tournament team of the Can-Am Challenge volleyball tournament in Alberta, Canada, on Saturday night.

The Warriors (3-1) finished second to host Alberta, falling to the Golden Bears 14-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14. Umlauft had a match-high 18 kills and senior hitter Joshua Walker added 15 in the loss. Freshman middle Shane Welch was in on five of UH’s six blocks.

The Warriors open their NCAA season with the 17th Outrigger Invitational, Jan. 13-15. The field includes UCLA, Penn State and Ball State. Hawaii begins Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Jan. 21 at the Sheriff Center against defending NCAA champion Stanford.

Cabalar captures Turtle Bay Amateur

Rudy Cabalar Jr. fired a final-round 6-under 66 to capture the Turtle Bay Amateur golf tournament on the Fazio Course yesterday.

Cabalar had five birdies and a bogey to go along with an eagle to finish the 36-hole tournament at 6-under 138. Cabalar was tied with three others after Saturday’s first round at even-par 72.

Brian Lee finished in second place after a 2-under 70 yesterday.

Other winners yesterday were Jerry Iman (154) in the A flight, Reid Takatsuka (153) in the B flight and Matthew Itagaki (169) in the C flight.

UH coed sailors win in California

The Hawaii coed sailing team beat out 26 other teams to win the Stoney Burke Intersectional in San Francisco for the second straight year yesterday.

UH scored 133 points to finish five ahead of runner-up UCLA.
