Hamamoto, Soero tied for 10th

Former University of Hawaii golfers Jarett Hamamoto and Pierre-Henri Soero opened with 72s yesterday at the PGA Tour Q-School First Stage, at Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course. This is the first time tour qualifying has been played in Hawaii.

Hamamoto and Soero are tied for 10th in a field of 34. The top 10 and ties after tomorrow’s final round advance to Second Stage.

Hamamoto was 3 under par after five holes, but bogeyed the eighth and played the back nine in 2 over. The two-time state high school champ from Hilo played for UH in 2005 and ’06, losing the WAC championship in sudden death as a senior.

Soero, originally from New Caledonia, went to high school in Paris before coming to Manoa in 2003. He qualified for the 2005 U.S. Open and now plays mini-tours from his home base in Florida. Yesterday he was 2 over after 10 holes, then birdied Nos. 14 and 16.

San Diego wins Kauai golf tourney

San Diego won its third straight Kauai Collegiate Invitational yesterday, while the University of Hawaii took third in the 10-team tournament at Puakea Golf Course. It was the Rainbows’ best finish since the 2007 WAC Championship.

The Toreros, led by medalist Gunner Wiebe, had a three-day total of 22-under-par 842. They beat British Columbia by 21 and the UH Black team by 34.

Rainbow junior TJ Kua (71) tied for third at 212 with Punahou graduate Alex Ching (70), a USD junior, and BC’s Andrew Robb (69).

UH sophomore Henry Park (76–219) was ninth. Nick Matsushima (70–220) tied for 10th to lead UH-Hilo, Nainoa Calip (70–221) led the UH Green team and Hawaii Pacific’s Alessandro Radice-Fossati (75–223) tied for 19th.

BYUH women get a volleyball win

Losaline Faka’osi knocked down 14 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 25-19, 25-17, 26-24 sweep of Grand Canyon in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match at Laie.

BYUH is 12-6 overall and 9-2 in the conference. Grand Canyon is 10-16 and 5-9.

In other PacWest volleyball matches:

» Kauai’s Poerava Gantt had 17 kills and 11 digs and Honolulu’s Crystal Powell added 16 kills and 19 digs to lift Chaminade to a 21-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Dominican at McCabe Gym. Senior setter Tanya Alvino had 54 assists for Chaminade (5-12, 2-8). Dominican is 3-20 and 0-11.

» Leilani Ramsey had 13 kills and 13 digs and Hillary Hurley had 10 kills and 18 digs as UH-Hilo swept Dixie State 25-15, 25-14, 25-18. The Vulcans improved to 10-1 in the conference and 15-3 overall. Dixie State is 12-7 and 7-4.
