Vulcans keep PWC volleyball lead

Hillary Hurley had 12 kills and 13 digs, and Kawena Cubi-Otineru added 12 kills and 12 digs to lead Hawaii-Hilo to its 11th consecutive victory last night, a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 sweep of Dixie State in Pacific West Conference volleyball at the UHH gym.

The Vulcans (16-3, 11-1 PacWest) also got 11 kills and 10 block assists from Rachel Thornquist to stay atop the conference standings. The Red Storm (12-8, 7-5) was led by Madisyn Fitzgerald’s 10 kills.

 

Sea Warriors drop Penguins

Courtney Curran put down 11 kills and Kelly Balanay added 10 kills and five blocks to lead Hawaii Pacific over Dominican 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 last night at the St. Andrew’s Priory gym.

Kyra Pelayo had a match-high 21 digs for the Sea Warriors (14-4, 8-3) against the Penguins (3-21, 0-12).

 

HPU rolls in men’s soccer

Mike Maloney scored twice within 11 seconds and Chance Bukoski had a goal and two assists as Hawaii Pacific blanked Chaminade 8-0 in a PacWest men’s soccer match at HPU’s Atherton Field yesterday.

Both of Maloney’s goals came in the 19th minute, the first on an assist by Bukoski and the second on one of Luis Jungo’s three assists, giving the Sea Warriors a 4-0 halftime lead.

Richard Guffens had two second-half goals and Kainoa Kahui added a goal and an assist for the Sea Warriors (9-6, 8-3) against the Silverswords (1-10-1, 0-9-1).

In the later women’s game, Mairead Bretney had a goal and an assist in the first half to lead Hawaii Pacific over Chaminade 3-1.

Yasmina Taketa and Jacqueline Ho also scored for the Sea Warriors (6-8, 6-5). Whitney Williams scored in the 84th minute for the Silverswords (2-10, 2-8).
