Tigers win at Turtle Bay

Princeton, an Ivy League school that gives no athletic scholarships, went wire-to-wire to win the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational yesterday at the Fazio Course.

The Tigers shot 306 in the final round for a three-day total of 897, three shots better than Portland State. Host Hawaii took sixth in the seven-team event, at 316–949.

PSU’s Tiffany Schoning was medalist, closing with a 3-under 69 for a 218 total. Teammate Britney Yada (75–225), a Waiakea alum, tied for seventh and Princeton sophomore Anna Jang (75–226), a Punahou alum, tied for 10th.

Wahine sophomore Ka’ili Britos tied for fifth at 76–224. Teammates Madeleine Ystrom (76–228) and Brigitte Baker (79–238) also finished in the top 25.

» At the LPGA Futures Tour Qualifying Tournament, being played on three courses in Florida, Hilo’s Kimberly Kim shot a third-round 74 and has a share of 17th. Kim is at even-par 216 going into today’s final round.

Leilehua graduate Britney Choy (72–219) and Roosevelt graduate Xyra Suyetsugu (76–221) also made the cut. It came at 8-over 224, with 92 golfers in the field of 308 advancing.

Others with Hawaii ties are: Kelly Nakashima (72–226), Shayna Miyajima (79–227), Mari Chun (79–230) and Lisa LaFollette (82–238).

» At the Champions Tour first stage qualifier in Seaside, Calif., Honolulu’s Stan Souza was disqualified in the third round at Bayonet Golf Club. Souza was in 22nd place after two days. Holualoa’s Mark Morrison goes into today’s final round in 27th, at 77–235. Dick Mast (69–213) is in first after shooting the first sub-70 round of the week.

Seasiders hold off Vulcans

Natasha Aiono scored her 10th goal of the season and Kaci McNeil her third as No. 18 Brigham Young-Hawaii celebrated senior day with a 2-1 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in a PacWest women’s soccer match at the BYUH field.

It was the regular-season finale for the PacWest championship Seasiders (14-1-2, 12-1-1), who will learn their NCAA D-II postseason fate Monday.

» In the earlier men’s match, Kevin Fronk scored in the 66th minute to lift Brigham Young-Hawaii over Hawaii-Hilo 1-0.

Zachary Rasmussen had five saves for the Seasiders (4-11-1, 3-10-1). The Vulcans (6-8-2, 5-6-2) finish their season tomorrow at HPU at 12:30 p.m.

Hawaii Pacific wins in 4

Sanoe Recca had 18 kills and Natasha Bell chipped in 13 for host Hawaii Pacific in a 34-32, 25-21, 22-25, 25-12 victory over Academy of Art last night.

The Sea Warriors improved to 17-5 overall and 11-4 in league play.

Bess on Sports illustrated’s midseason all-pro team

Former Warriors receiver Davone Bess of the Miami Dolphins was named to Sports Illustrated’s annual midseason all-pro team in the magazine’s Nov. 8 issue. Bess has 39 catches for 401 yards and three touchdowns through seven games. He is tied for eighth in the AFC in receptions. He also is tied for fifth in the AFC in punt-return average at 10.8.
