The Interfaith Alliance Hawaii will present longtime Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporter Mary Adamski with a Special Recognition and Appreciation Award later this month.

The award recognizes Adamski for her "professional commitment to excellence in journalism and especially for her long-standing, honest, unbiased reporting in the presentation of the issues, activities and philosophies of the spiritual and faith-based communities in Hawaii," the alliance said.

Adamski will be presented with the award at the Interfaith Alliance Hawaii’s Eighth Annual Awards Celebration dinner Nov. 14.

The Wisconsin native arrived in Hawaii in August 1961 and was hired in December of that year by the Star-Bulletin. She covered the police beat from 1964 to 1978 and worked as night assistant city editor for six years. She missed writing, so she asked to return to reporting.

Adamski established herself as the Star-Bulletin’s religion reporter in recent years.

As a finale to her long career, she traveled in October 2009 to Rome with some residents of Kalaupapa to cover the canonization of Father Damien, who ministered to them.

Adamski retired July 30 from the Star-Advertiser.
