Big Island police said the 24-year-old Papaikou man who was involved in a one-vehicle crash last night near Honomu died today.

Souza crossed the centerline, struck guardrails on both sides of the shoulders and overturned, police said.

Police said he was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.

Fire rescue personnel took him to the Hilo Medical Center where he died at 3 a.m. today.

Police say speed and alcohol may be factors in the crash.

This was the 24th Big Island traffic fatality compared with 20 the same time last year.
