Papaikou man dies in crash of pickup truck on Big Island
Big Island police said the 24-year-old Papaikou man who was involved in a one-vehicle crash last night near Honomu died today.
Tylor K. Souza was driving south in a 1985 Toyota pickup truck on Hawaii Belt Road south of the Honomu Transfer Station road when he lost control at the 14-mile marker, police said.
Souza crossed the centerline, struck guardrails on both sides of the shoulders and overturned, police said.
Police said he was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle.
Fire rescue personnel took him to the Hilo Medical Center where he died at 3 a.m. today.
Police say speed and alcohol may be factors in the crash.

This was the 24th Big Island traffic fatality compared with 20 the same time last year.
