Cal State Dominguez Hills opened with a 7-0 run and the Toros were never threatened in an 81-54 nonconference men’s basketball victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii last night in Carson, Calif.

Jake Dastrup hit five 3-pointers en route to 17 points and Marques Whippy had 10 rebounds for the Seasiders (0-1), who were outrebounded 48-24.

Vulcans women fall on road

Hawaii-Hilo sophomore guard Natalie Mata scored 11 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Vulcans dropped a nonconference women’s basketball game to Central Washington last night in Ellensburg, Wash. Benefit race honors injured paddler

Luke’s ThanksGeev’um Race, a benefit in honor of injured paddler Luke Evslin, is set for Sunday.

Evslin suffered near-fatal injuries during last month’s Molokai Hoe when he was struck by the propeller of Kailua Canoe Club’s escort boat during a water change. Evslin, a coach and paddler for Kailua, requested that proceeds from the event go to Project Pure Light, an organization that enables physically, mentally and emotionally disabled people to participate in water sports.

The courses are on the windward side and registration is available online at ocpaddler.com. Donations may be sent to Kailua Canoe Club, P.O. Box 177, Kailua, HI 96734. For information, call Lois Hewitt at 330-9812.
