Military tries out system to evaluate wounded service members

A new system for evaluating wounded service members is being tried at Pearl Harbor, Hickam Air Force Base and Tripler Army Medical Center.

U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel Akaka said yesterday the program is being rolled out slowly to ensure a quality process for service members and veterans.

The system is meant to eliminate duplicate disability ratings given to discharged service members by both the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.

Currently, service members receive a disability rating by the military, and then they go through the process again to receive a new rating from the VA.
