Bryant Moniz paid tribute to Colt Brennan in last night’s Western Athletic Conference football game by taking one of his pages from the record book.

The University of Hawaii quarterback threw for 560 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Warriors to an easy 41-7 victory over San Jose State before an Aloha Stadium crowd of 30,011.

Moniz eclipsed the single-game passing mark by 1 yard. When Brennan gets out of the hospital after being seriously injured in a car accident Friday on the Big Island, he might demand a recount.

Brennan set the UH record in 2006 with 559 yards against Arizona State in the Hawaii Bowl. His condition was upgraded to stable yesterday, much to the relief of UH fans across the island chain.

Last night’s win raised Hawaii’s record to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the WAC. If the Warriors defeat New Mexico State this Saturday, they will finish no lower than second in the league. San Jose State dropped to 1-10 for the season and 0-6 in league play.

Moniz completed 32 of 44 passes and had two picked off by San Jose State safety James Orth and cornerback Ronnie Yell. UH slotbacks Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares did most of the damage against the overmatched Spartans secondary. Pilares, battling back from a nasty hamstring injury, caught nine passes for 154 yards and one score. Salas countered with eight receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown.

Hawaii had 626 yards of total offense, while holding San Jose State to a paltry 164. The defense forced two interceptions, both by linebacker Aaron Brown, who returned one for a touchdown. The defense also had eight quarterback sacks.

Hawaii struck first and never looked back. After two three and outs to open the game, the Warriors went 70 yards on three plays to take an early lead on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Moniz to wide receiver Royce Pollard. Scott Enos added the extra point to give Hawaii a 7-0 advantage with 8:22 left in the opening quarter.

The defense held San Jose State on the ensuing series as Hawaii set up shop at its own 15. The Warriors marched steadily down the field before the drive stalled inside the red zone. Enos made good on a 32-yard field goal to give Hawaii a 10-0 advantage with 27 seconds left in the opening period.

Hawaii built on that lead after Brown picked off a Jordan La Secia pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. It was Brown’s first pick of his career. Enos added the PAT to give Hawaii a 17-0 advantage with 13:28 left in the second quarter.

San Jose State finally got on the board with a nice nine-play, 65-yard drive that cut Hawaii’s margin to 17-7 with 9:36 left in the half. La Secla hit wide receiver Noel Grigsby on a big third-and-1 play for a 21-yard scoring strike as Harrison Waid added the PAT for the Spartans.

The Warriors answered with a stellar seven-play, 98-yard drive to go back on top by 17 as UH running back Alex Green scored from 3 yards out. Enos added the PAT to give Hawaii a comfortable 24-7 lead with 4:49 left in the opening half. The big play in this series was a 47-yard completion from Moniz to Salas to set up the Green run.

Hawaii added a 22-yard field goal by Enos as the half ended. It was set up by another Brown interception.

The Warriors took awhile before getting on the scoreboard in the third. After the defense held the Spartans on a fourth-down play at its own 47, Moniz quickly led the Warriors into the end zone once again. His second touchdown pass of the game was for 26 yards to Salas. Enos added the PAT to make it 34-7 with 3:26 left in the third quarter.

Moniz struck quickly again on the ensuing series as Hawaii went 81 yards on only four plays to increase its lead to 34 points. The final 37 yards came on a touchdown pass from Moniz to Pilares with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. Enos added the PAT to give Hawaii a 41-7 lead.
