The scene of a late night auto accident which claimed the life of one person and injured others when a car ran off Kamehameha Highway in the Pupukea area, hit a rock wall and some fences and destroyed the carport of the Kama family home, leaning on the wall of the residence (according to family members).

A 21-year-old Aiea man was killed and four other people were injured in a one-car crash on Kamehameha Highway on the North Shore last night.

Honolulu police said that at about 10:23 p.m. a 23-year-old Honolulu woman was driving a black Mercury four-door sedan with four passengers heading toward Haleiwa when she lost control of the car. The car crossed the center line just south of Kupaoa Place, hit a rock wall, an unoccupied parked car, two fences and went airborne, flipping over and slamming into a carport of a Kamehameha Highway home.

A male passenger was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken by city paramedics to Wahiawa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The city medical examiner’s office identified him as Unique Murray.

The driver and her other passengers — a 23-year-old woman, an 18-year-old male from Honolulu, and a 19-year-old Aiea man — were all taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition. The 19-year-old was admitted in serious condition, while the other three were treated and released.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide. She will be released pending investigation, police said this morning.

No one in the home was injured but the carport had extensive damage, police added.

The accident closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions from Kapuhi Street to Pupukea Road for several hours. Hawaiian Electric crews were called to repair a damaged power line caused by the accident.
