Moiliili man surrenders to police after 4-hour standoff

A four-hour standoff between police and a man who had barricaded himself a Moiliili apartment ended peacefully last night when the man surrendered after speaking with negotiators.

Police were called to the McCully Villa apartment building on Algaroba Street around 2:30 p.m. after witnesses saw the man choking and threatening a woman. When they arrived, the 26-year-old man had barricaded himself in one of the apartments with the woman apparently locked out on a balcony.

SWAT personnel were able to safely remove the woman from the balcony while negotiators spoke with the man.

The man, who lives in the building, finally surrendered around 6:30 p.m. and was taken for psychological evaluation. Police arrested him for abuse of a family member and a contempt warrant. He was being held last night on $3,000 bail.
