Mariota wins Gatorade honor

Saint Louis quarterback Marcus Mariota was named the 2010 Gatorade Hawaii Football Player of the Year yesterday.

Mariota led the Crusaders to an 11-1 record and their first Division I state football title since 2002. Mariota passed for 2,597 yards and 33 touchdowns, completing 162 of 252 passes. He also carried the ball 60 times for 455 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mariota holds a 3.55 GPA and is committed to Oregon next year.

Long Beach State tops BYUH

Jet Chang scored 32 points and Cory Chase added 14, but it was not enough as Brigham Young-Hawaii saw a late rally fall short in a 90-83 nonconference men’s basketball loss to Long Beach State last night in Long Beach, Calif.

The Seasiders (3-3) were down 82-66 with 4:21 left but closed to within 84-80. BYUH never got closer than four, with the 49ers (4-4) pulling away on free throws.

Pelayo makes second team

Hawaii Pacific junior libero Kyra Pelayo, who set the school’s single-season digs record this year, was named to the second team of the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America women’s volleyball team yesterday.

Pelayo is the first Sea Warriors libero to earn All-America honors since the position was instituted in 2002. The PacWest Libero of the Year finished third nationally in digs per set (6.72), with the record-setting 598 dig total.

Toreros blow past Seariders

Emily Hatch scored 16 points and added 13 rebounds to lead San Diego over Brigham Young-Hawaii 84-71 in the opening game of the Hukilau Invitational women’s basketball tournament at Cannon Activities Center last night.

Dara Tompkison scored 19 points with six steals and five assists to pace the Seasiders (1-4). Danna Lynn Hooper came off the bench for 11 points for BYUH against the Toreros (6-2).
