The Hawaii men’s basketball team hung tough for a while, but poor shooting ultimately did in the Rainbow Warriors in a 78-57 loss to No. 21 BYU at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.

The Rainbow Warriors (5-2) were held to a season-worst 30 percent shooting from the field, including a 1-for-13 effort on 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, they yielded a season high in points as BYU (8-0) shot 50 percent.

UH dropped its 13th straight road game going back to the 2008-09 season.

UH trailed 43-27 at halftime. The Rainbows got to within 12 in the first few minutes of the second half, but couldn’t get the deficit under double digits and gradually fell out of it.

BYU’s preseason All-America guard, Jimmer Fredette, scored seven points under his average with 16, but the deep Cougars got production across the board.

Senior point guard Hiram Thompson led UH with 15 points, while Joston Thomas added 12. Sophomore center Vander Joaquim notched his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UH coach Gib Arnold went with a very young and previously unseen starting lineup with three true freshmen.

Bobby Miles got his first start at point guard over Thompson, Bo Barnes started over Zane Johnson at shooting guard, and Trevor Wiseman got the nod at small forward.

The Rainbows took much better care of the ball than in their heartbreaking 54-53 loss at Cal Poly on Wednesday. They had 14 turnovers, compared to 27 against the Mustangs, but notched just two assists against the Cougars.
