Ocean conditions rough for inexperienced surfers today

Surf is up on Oahu’s north and west shores, with 12- to 20-foot faces today.

All beaches except Pokai Bay are at extreme hazard level. Pokai Bay is at a high level.

A high surf advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow for north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. A high surf warning is in effect for that same period for Kaui and the Big Island.

Ocean Safety Division’s Operations Chief Jim Howe said while there have been no emergency calls on Oahu today crews are dealing with a lot of preventive actions, issuing warnings to not just visitors but to a lot of local youngsters.

Inexperienced surfers should stay out of the water because currents are strong in addition to the high surf, Howe warned.

Winds are variable at less than 5 mph, making for clean conditions.

The Da Hui Backyard Shootout surfing contest is being held at Banzai Pipeline.
