Kaiser coach Simon Bitanga hadn’t looked far enough ahead to figure out the tiebreaker rules.

Focusing instead on avenging an earlier loss to No. 7 Farrington, Bitanga can now ask around to see whether his Cougars will be the top seed out of the East after a 49-41 victory over the Governors last night in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The ninth-ranked Cougars (10-2) gave up just seven fourth-quarter points to move into a first-place tie with Farrington (10-2) atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East.

"Honestly, I’ll have to start asking around because we weren’t even looking ahead to that," Bitanga said. "We were focused on beating a good team like Farrington because they are always one of the top-rated teams.

"This is a big win for our school."

Makana Borden posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds and guard Mele Adams had 12 points, including a key bucket with 2:40 remaining to cap an 11-0 run after Farrington closed to 36-34 at the end of the third quarter.

"Today we were ready to play," Borden said. "We came out to win and that’s what we were able to do."

The Cougars did a much better job containing Farrington’s Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo and Kirsten Liana, two of the top four scorers in the OIA.

Tatupu-Leopoldo finished with 10 points after scoring 23 in a 64-51 win over Kaiser three weeks ago, and Liana had 12 points and nine rebounds, but didn’t score in the fourth quarter.

"I thought it was a combination of poor shooting and fatigue, but we also didn’t play a very good defensive game," Farrington coach Caroline Tatupu said. "We got lazy on defense, let them go to the free-throw line, and just didn’t play very well."

Ten of Farrington’s 19 turnovers came in the pivotal fourth quarter, which started with the Governors only trailing 36-34.

Borden and Darcy Goulsby, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, had seven points during an 11-0 run to start the quarter.

Farrington only attempted three shots before Tatupu-Leopoldo’s jumper gave the Govs their first points of the quarter with 1:19 remaining.

Tatupu-Leopoldo nailed a 3 following a steal by Sierra-Marie Wong to pull Farrington within 47-41, but free throws by Adams and Borden were enough to seal the game.

"We limited both Brydgette and Kirsten to about half the points they scored on us the last time and we figured if we could do that we could win the game," Bitanga said.

Farrington shot just 22.2 percent (8-for-36) in the first half as Kaiser led 24-19 at the break.

Liana led the Governors’ charge in the third quarter with eight of the team’s 15 points, including the final four of a 7-0 run to close the quarter down just two.

Chasity Scanlan-Sevao was the third Farrington player in double figures with 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Adams led the Cougars with six steals, including three in the final quarter.
