Tweedt to play Ma in tennis final

Hawaii senior Jeremy Tweedt and Brigham Young-Hawaii senior Rong Ma advanced to today’s 10 a.m. final of the Honolulu Challenger Wild Card Tennis Tournament at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

The winner gains a wild-card berth in the main draw of the Honolulu Challenger, a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event that begins Jan. 25 at CORP.

Tweedt upset No. 1 seed John P. Fruttero 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Sebastian Bader 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Fruttero is an ATP professional from Montebello, Calif., and Bader is a senior at Hawaii Pacific.

Ma, the No. 2 seed, routed HPU’s Wilhelm Irwe 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and UH freshman David Schuster 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
