HPU splits softball series

The Hawaii Pacific softball team earned a doubleheader split against Cal State University-San Marcos yesterday in Kaneohe.

Chante Tesoro scored on an error in the sixth inning for the winning run in the 1-0 opener, but the Sea Warriors fell 4-3 in the second game.

Tesoro hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh, but HPU’s bid to tie failed.

Last year’s Division II national champions previously went 728 days between home nonconference losses, but HPU (4-2) dropped its second such game in four days.

CSUSM improved to 6-2.

BYUH picks up first win of season

Behind the arm of Gabby Hawkins, Brigham Young-Hawaii split a doubleheader against Azusa Pacific and picked up its first victory of the season yesterday in Laie.

BYUH (1-5) earned a 3-0 victory in the first game thanks to Hawkins’ seven-hitter with seven strikeouts. The freshman improved to 1-2 on the year.

Azusa Pacific won 8-0 in the second game.
