AOP ousts Punahou in boys basketball
Micah Dunhour hit two free throws with 57 seconds left and Academy of the Pacific held off Punahou 37-36 to win the final of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball third-place tournament today at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
The Dolphins earned the ILH’s last of three berths to next week’s state tournament.
Punahou’s Malik Johnson missed a 15-foot baseline jumper with 11 seconds left.
After AOP failed to seal it at the foul line, the Buffanblu’s Brian Matsukawa put up a 15-footer that came up short and the Dolphins’ Kona Makaula grabbed the rebound.
One quick pass and one steal later, a desperation heave by Punahou’s Lowell Tong hit the backboard as time ran out.
