New Mexico State's Hoku Nohara batted 7-for-13 with two homers and eight runs batted in while helping the Aggies finish 6-0 in a softball invitational.

BASEBALL

» Pacific (Ore.) sophomore Michael Arakaki (Mid-Pacific ’09) batted .375 with three singles and Nick Tasaka (Mid-Pacific ’09) finished 3-for-9 with two walks and a run scored as the Boxers lost three games to Pomona-Pitzer over the weekend to start the season. Junior Mike Nagamine (Mid-Pacific ’08) finished 3-for-12 with three runs and three RBIs and sophomore Rob Dittrick (Mid-Pacific ’09) started a game and gave up eight hits and four runs in six innings with a walk and two strikeouts for Pacific.

» Saint Martin’s (Wash.) junior Travis Jones (Mililani ’08) hit a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a 10-5 win over Puget Sound on Sunday. Loggers senior Kainoa Correa (Waiakea ’06) doubled and scored two runs in the only game of the series that was played due to weather.

» Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) freshman first baseman Brett Watanabe (‘Iolani ’10) went 4-for-8 with a home run and three RBIs in a doubleheader split against Redlands on Saturday.

» Monterey Peninsula (Calif.) freshman pitcher Bryson Gauthe (Kailua ’10) allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in three innings of a 14-3 victory over Redwoods on Saturday. Jordan Queja (Mililani ’09) singled, stole a base and scored twice and Ray Sugihara (Mililani ’10) doubled and scored a run for the Lobos.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

» Willamette (Ore.) junior Taylor Mounts (‘Iolani ’08) finished with 17 points, five rebounds and two steals as the Bearcats lost 115-69 to Whitworth (Wash.), the No. 1-ranked team in Division III, on Friday. Mounts scored 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting in a 119-77 loss to Whitman (Wash.) on Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

» Cal State Northridge sophomore forward Violet Alama (Kalani ’09) fell just short of a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in a 71-65 victory over Cal State Fullerton to give the Matadors their second win in three games. Analee Viena-Lota (Kamehameha ’07) added three points, six rebounds and five assists for Cal State Northridge.

» UNLV junior Jamie Smith (‘Iolani ’08) finished with six points, 10 rebounds and a steal in a 77-60 loss to Brigham Young on Saturday.

» Massachusetts Institute of Technology sophomore forward Anna Merrifield (Punahou ’09) scored 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting and added four rebounds in a 58-56 loss to Wheaton College last Wednesday.

» Utah sophomore Iwalani Rodrigues (Kalani ’08) went 3-for-5 from the 3-point line and finished with 10 points in a 61-58 loss to Brigham Young on Saturday.

» Clackamas (Ore.) sophomore guard Johnelle Kapua (Mid-Pacific ’09) nailed three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting with two rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 96-89 win over Umpqua on Saturday.

MEN’S GOLF

San Diego junior Alex Ching (Punahou ’08) carded a top-10 finish with a three-round score of 2-over 212 to finish tied for eighth place in the Battle of the Beach yesterday in Newport Coast, Calif. Oregon State redshirt freshman David Fink (‘Iolani ’09) finished in a tie for 30th place after shooting 72 in all three rounds.

WOMEN’S GOLF

» UCLA junior Stephanie Kono (Punahou ’08) shot a second-round 5-over 76 and is tied for 34th place going into today’s final round of the Northrop Grumman Challenge in Los Angeles. Furman (S.C.) senior Jackie Hilea (Moanalua ’07) shot a 79 and is tied for 45th place at 15 over.

» Tulsa sophomore Kristina Merkle (Moanalua ’09) shot a final-round 76, her best of the tournament, to finish in a tie for 38th place at 14-over 230 at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate that finished on Monday.

SOFTBALL

» New Mexico State senior Hoku Nohara (Kamehameha ’07) went 7-for-13 with two homers, eight runs scored and eight RBIs as the Aggies finished 6-0 in the Hotel Encanto Invitational over the weekend. Sophomore Tehani Ka’aihue (Kapolei ’09) went 5-for-16 with a homer, two doubles, three RBIs and seven runs scored for NMSU.

» Brigham Young freshman Katie Manuma (Campbell ’10) finished 8-for-17 with a home run and three RBIs in the Kajikawa Classic, Feb. 10-12. The Cougars finished 2-3.

» Redlands (Calif.) junior catcher Kai Masutani (‘Iolani ’08) went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in a 12-7 victory over Whittier on Sunday.

 

MEN’S TENNIS

» Pacific (Ore.) sophomore Scott Kawamura (Aiea ’08) won both his singles and doubles matches to help the Boxers beat College of Idaho 7-2 on Sunday in their first match of the season. Kawamura teamed with senior Michael Okada (Waiakea ’07) to win in No. 2 doubles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

» Pepperdine sophomore Jackie Owens (Lahainaluna ’09) picked up a key win in No. 6 singles to lead the Waves to a 4-3 victory over Hawaii last Tuesday.

» Cal State Northridge senior Brooke Doane (Kamehameha ’07) remained undefeated in No. 1 doubles and won her No. 2 singles match in a 4-3 loss to nationally ranked Long Beach State on Saturday.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

» Brigham Young junior middle blocker Futi Tavana (Kauai ’05) had nine kills and hit .500 in a sweep of Lewis on Saturday. Tavana added six block assists, one solo block and two assists a day after putting down 10 kills and hitting .533 in a five-set loss to Loyola (Ill.).

» Stanford junior Brad Lawson (‘Iolani ’08) hit .442 with a match-high 23 kills and 16 digs and Spencer McLachlin (Punahou ’07) added 20 kills, eight digs and two solo blocks in a five-set win over UC Irvine on Saturday. Erik Shoji (Punahou ’08) added 12 digs and Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha ’07) had nine for the Cardinal.

» USC senior setter Riley McKibbin (Punahou ’07) had a match-high 61 assists, seven digs and four block assists and Tri Bourne (Academy of the Pacific ’07) had 15 kills, seven digs and six block assists and hit .361 in a five-set loss to Pepperdine on Friday.

» Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) freshman West Hatae (Hawaii Baptist ’10) combined for seven digs and an ace in a doubleheader split against Lindenwood (Mo.) on Saturday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

» Pacific (Calif.) senior Dara Tawarahara (‘Iolani ’07) had seven goals, four steals and three assists in four games as the Tigers finished undefeated in the Princeton Invitational over the weekend. Tawarahara had three of her seven goals in a 14-6 win over George Washington on Sunday.

» UC San Diego senior Hanalei Crowell (Kamehameha ’07) scored 10 goals, including four in a 12-10 win over Santa Clara on Saturday, to help the Toreros finish 2-2 in the Triton Invitational over the weekend.

» Occidental (Calif.) senior Karie Nickle (Kamehameha ’07) scored four goals and sophomore Nanea Fujiyama (Kamehameha ’09) added one in a 14-10 win over Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
