BYUH’s Whippy leads nation

Brigham Young-Hawaii senior guard Marques Whippy leads NCAA Division II men’s basketball players in rebounding.

Whippy averages 12.4 rebounds per game, and he’s ranked second in the nation with 3.1 steals per game.

» Chaminade rose three spots in the NCAA D-II men’s basketball West Region poll yesterday.

The Silverswords (12-5) are ranked fifth this week, up from No. 8, and Brigham Young-Hawaii (12-4) dropped one spot from seventh to eighth.

» Hawaii Pacific is ranked eighth in the NCAA D-II women’s basketball West Region poll.

The Sea Warriors moved up from No. 9 to No. 8 this week.

Patten stops Hawaii-Hilo in baseball

Isaac Duran pitched a four-hit, seven-inning shutout to lead Patten (Oakland, Calif.) past Hawaii-Hilo 7-0 in baseball yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Chris Houle and David Whiteside led the Lions (8-8) with two hits each.

The Vulcans dropped to 2-2.

BYUH’s Puzey 1 shot behind leaders

Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Aaron Puzey shot a 3-under 69 yesterday and is one shot behind the leaders in the first round of the 35th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Turtle Bay Palmer Course.

TJ Kua and Kamden Brakel of host Hawaii shot 1-over 73s and are five shots in back.

Conrad Shindler of Texas A&M and Max Homa of California are the co-leaders after 4-under 68s.

Texas A&M and California are tied for the team lead at 283.

Brigham Young-Hawaii is nine strokes behind in fifth place.

The tourney continues today and finishes tomorrow.
