Diving coach, stuntman at QB Club
University of Hawaii diving coach Mike Brown and film stuntman Joji Yoshida are the guest speakers at tomorrow’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Brown and his wife, assistant coach Anita Rossing, recently guided the UH men to their first Conference USA championship, while the UH women finished second in the Western Athletic Conference. They will travel to NCAA Zone E qualifying in Minneapolis this week.
Yoshida, a Hawaii resident, has appeared in "Hawaii Five-0," the upcoming "Battleship" movie and several other films.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. for $15 with the program at noon. The public is invited.
2 Hawaii surfers advance Down Under
Hawaii surfers Carissa Moore and Coco Ho are still in the hunt, but Alana Blanchard was eliminated today in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at Australia’s Snapper Rocks.
Moore and Ho, who won their first-round heats last weekend, each took second in their third-rounders and will surf in the fourth round when the contest resumes, perhaps as early as tomorrow.
Australia’s Chelsea Hedges topped Blanchard in the second round, posting a two-wave score of 11.83 to 7.67 for Blanchard.
Hedges then went on to win her third-round heat, with Moore finishing second. Ho also finished second in her third-rounder. She’ll face Jacqueline Silva of Brazil in the fourth round. Moore will surf against California’s Courtney Conlogue.
Olympic medalist to conduct clinic
Aaron Peirsol, a seven-time Olympic medalist, will teach a clinic with the ‘Iolani School Swim Club next Sunday at the ‘Iolani swimming pool.
The clinic is open to all registered USA Swimming members (limit of first 120) from 1 to 4 p.m.
Peirsol, a former backstroke specialist, won five gold medals and two silvers across the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
BYUH trips Gonzaga in women’s tennis
Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Gonzaga 6-1 in women’s tennis yesterday in Laie.
Annie Hwang, Elwen Li, Sasha Ublrichtova and Saline Aranda all won in singles and doubles for the Seasiders, who improved to 7-0.
