Arizona State conquers Hawaii

Eighth-ranked Arizona State went 2-for-2 in paradise, capturing the University of Hawaii’s Paradise Desert Classic yesterday at Luana Hills Country Club. The one-day event included four teams from the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational — which ASU won Tuesday at the Kaneohe Klipper course — and Columbia.

The Sun Devils shot 23-over 311 at Luana, a course so vast and wild that golfers were allowed to ride carts, a rarity in the college game. Osaka Gakuin was next at 332.

The Rainbow Wahine shared third with Columbia at 341. Hawaii-Hilo was last at 371.

Hawaii was led by sophomore Ka’ili Britos, who shot 9-over 81 for sixth place. Freshman teammate Anna DePalma, who competed as an individual, took seventh at 83.

Arizona State’s Giulia Molinaro and Columbia’s Michelle Piyapattra shared medalist honors at 75. Dayna Bersamin led Hawaii-Hilo with an 87.

DePalma is one of five freshmen on the Wahine roster. The only senior is Brittany Bomar.

"A lot of players are so close in their scoring," UH coach Lori Castillo said. "I have to sit down and figure out who to take on the next road trip. We have a lot of work to do in terms of fine-tuning for some and, for others, getting them some confidence back. We were much better this week in a lot of different ways. I’m hoping to carry that forward for the end of our season."

Hawaii travels to the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational a the end of the month, then to the Western Athletic Conference championships, April 15-17 in Mesa, Ariz. It had its best scores of the season on Monday and Tuesday, when it finished 11th in its 19-team invitational.

Osaka, located far south of the devastation in Japan, took its scheduled flight here to play both tournaments.
