Patton fires no-hitter for HPU
Breanne Patton alllowed only two baserunners and threw a no-hitter as Hawaii Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 2-0 yesterday in Kaneohe.
Melissa Kirby shut out the Sea Warriors in the second game of the douobleheader, beating the Seasiders 14-0 in five innings.
HPU baseball sweeps Grand Canyon
Kale Sumner’s two-run double highlighted a three-run fifth as Hawaii Pacific rallied for a 7-5 win in the second game against Grand Canyon, completing a sweep of a PacWest baseball doubleheader in Phoenix yesterday.
The Sea Warriors (9-13, 7-5 PacWest) held off the Antelopes (11-15, 7-9) 6-4 as Bobby Jackson and Cory Yuh combined on a seven-hitter.
Whippy, Chang add honors
Brigham Young-Hawaii guards Jet Chang and Marques Whippy added two more honors to their resume as they lead the Seasiders into their first NCAA Division II Elite Eight basketball tournament appearance next week.
The two were selected to the second team of the Daktronics West Regional All-Star Team. Chang, a junior, leads the PacWest in scoring (19.9 ppg) and Whippy in rebounding (11.8 rpg).
Whippy also earned the PacWest’s final weekly honor in men’s basketball after averaging 17.7 points and 10 rebounds per game in three West Regional games. The senior was named the region’s most outstanding player.
Seasiders win in tennis
The Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s and women’s tennis teams concluded their road trip with wins over Francis Marion yesterday in Augusta, Ga.
The Seasiders women improved to 19-0 with a 5-0 win over the Patriots, while the men downed the Patriots to improve to 8-5.
Wahine appear at NCAA meet
Hawaii senior Emma Friesen finished 26th in yesterday’s preliminary round of the 3-meter dive on Day 2 of the NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Austin, Texas.
Sophomore Taylor Ritenberg was 41st in the preliminary round of the 100 breaststroke.
