Hilo’s Yada wins Big Sky title
Hilo’s Britney Yada, a Portland State sophomore, holed out from 105 yards for eagle on the first hole yesterday and went on to win the Big Sky Conference Women’s Golf Championship by five shots.
Yada led the Vikings to their second straight team title. They shot a tournament-record 880 at Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz., to beat Northern Arizona by 11 strokes.
Yada had rounds of 72-68-70. Her 6-under-par 210 total broke the school 54-hole record she set earlier this month on the same course.
It was Yada’s eighth straight top-10 finish. The Waiakea graduate has earned first-team all-conference honors both years.
Yada, a three-time BIIF champion, was named Big Sky Golfer of the Week for the third time in her career April 6 after winning her first collegiate title, the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The Vikings now advance to an NCAA regional next month.
Wahine last at WAC championship
The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine dropped from third place to last on Sunday’s final day of the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Championship in Mesa, Ariz. San Jose State won its third straight title, beating New Mexico State by two shots.
