A good day to be recognized

Pfc. Anthony T. Kahoohanohano of Maui got a little extra attention when, 60 years after his death, the nation’s top military honor was bestowed.

President Barack Obama yesterday awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to Kahoohanohano and Pfc. Henry Svehla of New Jersey, who both had died in heroic battle during the Korean War. It was Obama’s first major presidential appearance after the Osama bin Laden assassination, so more media than usual were hovering.

Also deserving of a medal: the unsung fellow who read the proclamation and clearly had studied up on the pronunciation of Kahoohanohano.

Election begins at your mailbox

Oahu voters, keep an eye on your mail in the next day or two for a passcode due to arrive from the city Neighborhood Commission. That will allow you to vote online or by phone for candidates seeking seats on the neighborhood boards.

Those lacking Internet service can still vote online at city hall or Kapolei Hale. Let’s hope a lot more people will weigh in than the shamefully low 6 percent that voted in 2009.
