Olelo contest winners named

Winners of the Olelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition were named yesterday in festivities at Ko Olina Resort & Marina. Chosen from among a record 582 entries, winners were presented with Sony video cameras.

Students in elementary, intermediate and high school were challenged to create videos addressing issues affecting their community, the state, country or world, in the contest whose mission is to "learn the value and importance of speaking out and speaking strong by using the creative and powerful medium of video," as stated by entry materials.

"Students are just inundated by new technology … and they’re jumping on YouTube doing silly stuff that’s maybe not even meaningful to them," said Angela Angel, Olelo director of communications and media services.

"What we want to do is engage them in doing video, but with a purpose for the community," she said.

"We want to make sure that the kids grow up knowing that free speech has a price," Angel added.

The contest started in 2003, and while about 150 entries were submitted by 240 students the next year, the 582 entries received this year were submitted by more than 1,300 students.

"If we just continue to do it, kids will grow up through this contest and become good community leaders or, at least, community participants," Angel said.
