Aiea man is charged in stabbing

A 27-year-old Aiea man who allegedly stabbed a man during an argument over drinking money was charged Thursday night with second-degree attempted murder.

BK Bisek was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.

Police said the victim, a 52-year-old man, had bought some alcohol and had been drinking with Bisek, whom police described as a "recent acquaintance," at about 11 p.m. Tuesday at Makalapa Park.

When the alcohol ran out, Bisek allegedly demanded that the victim buy more. The victim was stabbed with a knife after he told Bisek he had no more money, police said.

The victim was taken to the hospital with a puncture wound and several cuts, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

Stolen sushi-making machine sought

Big Island police are investigating the theft earlier this year of a sushi-making machine valued at $12,000.

Police said the electronic appliance weighs nearly 100 pounds, stands about 20 inches high and is about 22 inches long and 14 inches wide.

The machine was taken in a burglary on the 700 block of Kilauea Avenue on Feb. 20.

Officers seek help in robbery case

Witnesses who may have seen an attempted robbery at a fast-food restaurant in downtown Hilo on March 6 are asked to contact Hawaii County police.

Three men tried to take a wallet from a 57-year-old man sometime between 9 and 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the McDonald’s on Kinoole Street, police said.

Detectives want to talk with a couple who assisted the victim and to any other witnesses in the area.

One of the suspects is described as a man in his mid-20s to mid-30s, about 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet tall with a husky build, a dark complexion and shoulder-length curly hair. He was not wearing a shirt.

The second man is in his early 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall with a medium build, a dark complexion and short dark hair. He was wearing dark shorts and no shirt.

Detectives learned that there was a third suspect involved, another man in his 20s, about 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a slim build and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a dark T-shirt, a pair of dark shorts and a black cap, with a design on it, worn backward.

Police ask that witnesses or anyone else with information about this case call the Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Blaze mars apartment in Kalihi

The American Red Cross is assisting a Kalihi family of three after a fire that started on the ground floor outside their apartment building Friday night and traveled to their upstairs apartment unit.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in heat, flame and smoke damage.

Capt. Terry Seelig said 20 firefighters responded to the 5:20 p.m. call to Democrat and Kalihi streets.

The fire began on the ground floor outside the two-story walkup near a gas line, spread to the apartment and burned a couch and some clothing, he said.

The first floor of the structure is built with concrete blocks, but the second floor’s exterior walls are wood, Seelig said.

Fire investigators have yet not determined the cause of the fire, but are investigating a gas line to determine whether it leaked before or after the fire.

Woman killed by trauma to head, back

Big Island police said Friday an autopsy determined that a woman killed at the Fairmont Orchid at Mauna Lani Resort in Kohala this week died from multiple blunt force and sharp force trauma to her head and back.

Meanwhile, Big Island prosecutors are asking a Circuit Court judge that the 46-year-old Washington state man charged with the murder of the woman, his girlfriend, be held without bail.

The state’s motion to have murder suspect Howard Philip Zimmerman of Bellevue, Wash., held without bail will be heard Tuesday at a preliminary hearing.

Zimmerman made his initial appearance Thursday in court on the charge of second-degree murder in the death of Susan Brockert, 44, also of Bellevue, Wash.

He was also charged with kidnapping, first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree criminal property damage.
