The Hawaii-dominated U.S. men’s K4 kayak boat placed fifth in the 1,000-meter B final at the Duisburg World Cup at Duisburg, Germany on Saturday.

Pat Dolan of Kailua and brothers Luke and Jake Michael, Hawaii residents both, could not hold first place after leading for much of their race.

Ryan Dolan of Kailua placed fifth in his K2 200-meter heat and third in the semifinals to qualify for today’s B final. The Michael brothers placed fifth in their K2 200-meter heat to reach the C final.

Wagner named coach of the year

Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball coach Ken Wagner was named the NCAA Division II CaptainU College Coach of the Year after leading the Seasiders to their first NCAA II national title game appearance.

"I am really honored by this award," said Wagner, the 21-year BYUH coach who received it for the first time. "There are so many great coaches at this level that to be singled out for this honor is a real thrill. But it wouldn’t have happened without a great bunch of players that really came together at the right time to make a great run in the NCAA tournament."

Wagner has taken BYUH to the tourney 10 times and has a career record of 414-189 with the Seasiders.
