Emergency officials advise public that hurricane season has started

Emergency management officials are warning residents to be prepared because the beginning of June marks the start of hurricane season.

The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management said in a news release Wednesday that although the National Weather Service Central Pacific Hurricane Center has forecast a below normal season, residents must remain aware and prepared.

Department Director Melvin Kaku reminds that Hurricane Iniki in 1992 devastated the island of Kauai but also caused substantial damage to Oahu.

Residents should develop an emergency preparedness kit containing about a week’s supply of items including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight and important documents stored in a watertight container.

Kauai’s Civil Defense Agency says the forecast for the Central Pacific region is two to four tropical cyclones.

A typical season usually sees four or five.
