Speed kite operator sustains serious injuries in fall at Makapuu

Fire rescue personnel rescued a speed kite operator Monday after he fell from the top of a several hundred-foot cliff in Makapuu.

The 38-year-old mainland visitor received serious injuries, including leg and rib injuries, but was conscious and alert.

The accident was reported at about 6:25 p.m.

Fire personnel hiked up the steep cliffside, while rescue personnel rappelled down from the top and reached the man at about 7:15 p.m. about a quarter of the way from the top, placed him in a sling and brought him down with a helicopter and transferred him to Emergency Medical Services, Capt. Terry Seelig said.

EMS personnel transported the man to the Queen’s Medical Center.
