WEMBLEY, England >> London police say a Wales fan died after an assault was reported outside Wembley Stadium before Tuesday’s match between Wales and England in the Euro 2012 qualifying.
The Metropolitan Police said it believes the victim and six men arrested in connection with the incident are all Wales supporters.
The match went on as scheduled with England winning 1-0.
Emergency services were called to the north London stadium 25 minutes before the 7:45 p.m. kickoff.
“Staff treated a 44-year-old man who had suffered a cardiac arrest,” a London Ambulance Service spokesman was quoted as saying by Britain’s Press Association. “Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the patient and he was taken to hospital.”
Police said the man sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. at the hospital.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s homicide and serious crime command are investigating the incident.
