When I think of treasure, like many of you, I think I’ve been stained by my pop culture celluloid world, and I think of pirates, sword fights, and gold doubloons. But we’ve already had a “Hawaii Five-0” episode with pōwā ma ka moana, so I knew tonight would not be about pirates, but about the treasure they search the world and, in some cases, for which they die trying to find.
In the Hawaiian language, “makamae” means precious, of great value, something highly prized. Many little girls are named Makamae, as it is pretty to say as well as for its sweet meaning. “Mea makamae” means precious object or a treasure, rather than a treasured darling, like a little girl. In this week’s episode, we see that the meaning of the word works both in subject, as Joe White, McG and the Team are all searching for treasure — and for some of them, searching for a little more than just the golden kind that jingles.
The story itself about a young man who ends up dead while searching for treasure at sea, leaving behind a mother who is stricken by Alzheimer’s and has her the precious memories of her son buried in her addled mind, was an interesting twist on the theme. Buried secrets, buried truths, buried treasure — all ideas and themes that made tonight’s episode a fun revelation on character, even without two seasoned guest stars taking some of the Five-0 team’s spotlight.
Patty Duke’s return to network television was a treat for me, as I worked with her in the early ’90s on a television pilot that never aired, yet spawned her short-lived series, “Amazing Grace.” Ms. Duke’s portrayal of Sylvia Spencer, a woman whose mental illness causes her to think that her son is still a child on his way home from school, was touching as well as sincere. Duke is an amazing professional and I was pleased to see that her role on “Hawaii Five-0” was not only a way for her to shine, but reminded us that no matter what kind of screen she is on — she knows how to make an impact. And if you ever have a chance to meet her, she is one of the most interesting women I’ve ever met. (Just make sure you call her Anna.)
Peter Fonda played the usual crusty opportunist role as Jesse Billings, a deep-sea treasure hunter. I’m sure we’ve seen him play this type of role before, but it worked for tonight’s episode — I just wished there had been a few more scenes with him. I guess we can’t just have Joe and Danny play the curmudgeons; may as well throw in a guest star to shake up the carguments.
Well, at least the bromance seems to still be intact — though I know that there were a few women in this episode that tried to break up the McG/Danno bromarriage. There was the return of Michelle Borth, McG’s romantic interest from season one, Lt. Catherine Rollins, and the introduction of Dr. Gabrielle Asano, played by Autumn Reeser, who was rumored this summer to be Danno’s new “love interest.”
Yes, I know that coffee is a beverage, not a relationship, but that is where this storyline seems to be going. Seeing as how some “Five-0” cast members and producers reacted to the questions about rumored romantic storylines, I’ll keep my opinions to myself about this character until it fully comes to fruition. I don’t want to ruffle any more feathers about who’s falling in love with who — someone might send Wo Fat over to settle my naughty writing fingers. And that could leave a mark.
A few welcomed returns to the show, besides Catherine, have to be Kamekona (Taylor Wily) and my favorite, Charlie Fong. Kamekona and his new, 31 flavors shrimp truck was a great way for me to almost want to try shrimp mochi for dessert. And Charlie (played by Brian Yang) was really effective with his concerned friend face when Chin asked him to find out who had accessed his HPD log. His scenes were a nice reminder that many are concerned about our Kono.
I have to say, Kono’s storyline is getting better and better as the episodes go on, as the tension and conflict continue to be ratcheted up. I’m in a few knots thinking about how she’s going to get out of this mess and how the Five-0 team will come to her rescue. But I’m really enjoying watching her conflicted face. It makes me a little sad that she is becoming a bit tarnished by her experience. It makes for a much more complex character and I’m sure Grace Park is enjoying the depth and complexity she gets to explore within her character. I know we are enjoying watching the torment flash across her face whenever Chin Ho comes to her door.
But overall, no matter how much we want to toss around the “Treasure” theme, a lot of what I saw in the episode subtext, is that what is precious to one person, may not be to another. Blake Spencer, our uncredited victim, thought that what was precious cargo was his grandfather’s body, not a cache of Hawaii overprint notes (which currently are going for around $70 to $550 on Ebay).
And what McGarrett sees as precious would be to have his questions answered about his father. And Chin sees that what is precious is his relationship with Kono, no matter what the cost. All of these precious things are important in this episode, but what is precious to some is not always a treasure to another. At times, this is a hard lesson to learn, yet the Five-0 team seems to want to learn these lessons together. Hopefully, this can help their treasured team stay intact for the long run.
Redux Side Note:
JPAC, where Joe and Max took the bones of Sylvia Spencer’s father, is a real place and they do very important work. JPAC stands for Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, and their mission “involves investigating leads, recovering, and identifying Americans who were killed in action but were never brought home.” Max’s admiration is one I think we all probably share about the task JPAC has to our service men and women who have been considered “unknown” or MIA in any war or war zone. I’m pleased they were highlighted in tonight’s episode.
The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum is a real museum on O‘ahu and has been designated as the Hawaii State Museum of Natural and Cultural History. It is named in honor of Ke Ali‘i Pauahi and was founded by her husband Charles Reed Bishop in 1889. All of the shots you saw of the museum where taken in and outside of Hawaiian Hall and in the museum’s archival library. The museum is an amazing place that has helped to preserve Hawai‘i’s culture, heritage and artifacts. I encourage you to visit, even if it is to catch a glimpse of Danno trying to find a place to park his Camaro or find a cup of coffee.

I’m also loving Kono’s exploration of the dark side as it makes her seem more three dimensional. I don’t see the women in the episode as trying to break up the bromance, though. I am beginning to wonder why some of these heavily advertised guests such as Fonda and Springfield end up with so little screen time. Is it written that way, or did their performances end up on the cutting room floor? One final comment; I think it’s not so much that rumored romances were mentioned that upset the producers, but the resulting vitriolic outcry from some after the rumors were made public.

You are not the first to point that out to me, my husband “Chief” said the same thing last night. Here is the US Code regarding the wearing of uniforms:
United States Code Title 10 > Subtitle A > Part II > Chapter 45 § 772. When wearing by persons not on active duty authorized(f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force.
So as long as it does not discredit the Navy, they can be uncovered, but I would agree with you- it’s on the military advisor or the director about keeping some of the military protocol correct- especially something as blatant as that. Chief did say that there was some protocol that said that TV and movies cannot be absolutely correct as that would constitute impersonating a military service member. And in this day and age of terrorism, we don’t want to show everything “spot on” in case it is copied elsewhere and bring any harm to civilians and military personnel alike. I just have to comment on this too…as the wife of a SSGt. in the Air Force that used to work the flight line, checking it every 2 hours to make sure there wasn’t any debris AT ALL that could be sucked into an engine, he found it extremely believable that they were uncovered outside because believe me, the LAST thing that they want is something like a hat getting sucked into an engine & basically killing a multi-million dollar plane. I’ve heard stories from my hubby about how people couldn’t even have coins or pieces of paper or gum or anything like that in their pockets if they worked the flight line…

Wendie….I love reading how you relate the titles translations….its always so refreshing 🙂 I LOVED seeing “Charlie”,hopefully we’ll get ot see more of him as the season goes on,maybe even an episode that’s focused on something Charlie is working on….that would be awesome!!! Kono’s storyline is getting SO good,I still think she’s undercover,but its the type of undercover that only IA knows about which is why she could be getting into some trouble on next weeks episode. I am really enjoying the pace this season is going,I know some people aren’t but I think it’s the perfect pace and all will be told when the time is right and I look forward to reading your blog as we ride this seasons wave 😀 *HUGGLES*

i wish they would have promoted duke and fonda i cbs promos- they want better ratings and nowhere did i see a promo that included them- and i wish they wouldve gotten more screen time
the episode was awesome though- and it is looking like S2 is gonna be a big one! hated catherine leaving – what more can they take away from McG hes always getting screwed over. I really like laurens charachter and love the kono arch- although it seems a little obvious that shes undercover – theyre playing chin for a dumb – a@@ anyone can tell shes undercover . am i complaining too much? sorry–lol wendie your write up as usual is terrific- loved it!

Anyone else notice the slight reaction McG had when Navy g/f put the flower in her right ear? Very subtle but us locals knew what it meant. I thought it was a nice touch. Probably lost on the millions of other viewers but I appreciated it.

Delano is taken down and Kono gets the accolades she deserves she comes
back to Five-0 more of an equal. Yes, by nature of the passage of time
she is no longer a rookie and the team has always treated her with
respect and they know she can handle herself in any situation. But
subconsciously she would always be the rookie. In all families the baby
of the family continues to be the baby of the family no matter how old
she gets. The older kids still tend to treat the youngest as the baby.
Think about it. Steve is a SEAL. Danny has over 90
homicide cases under his belt between Jersey and Hawaii. Chin was on
the force for 15 years and is now a Lieutenant. Lori is ex-FBI and an
officer of Homeland Security. TPTB had to make Kono something more than
a sophomore cop even if she is part of Five-0. Now Kono will come back
to Five-0 a seasoned veteran and an unquestioned equal. I think this
story line is a stroke of genius!!

Wendie, I really enjoy your interpretations of these episodes. You always make me feel like there’s a whole different side of the episode that I didn’t necessarily connect with the first time. The analysis that all these different characters are searching for treasure — something very worthwhile, and worth holding onto — is a great one, and something no other blogger has touched on since the show aired on Monday.
Agree with the comments about the military covers – or lack thereof. With every generation of my family having served in some capacity, that kind of error is glaring to this viewer. (it’s also not the first time they’ve goofed on McG’s uniform. In season one Steve had just a few ribbons on his service dress in the pilot, and the next time he wore it at Meka’s funeral, there were twice as many ribbons. It kind of annoyed me). To see the guys in their khakis and everyone else around them in headgear was very odd.
On the other hand, the carry team for the dignified transfer was spot on and the brief ceremony was very moving, especially since we haven’t had a scene like that on Five-0 before.
Wendie, I really enjoy your interpretations of these episodes. You always make me feel like there’s a whole different side of the episode that I didn’t necessarily connect with the first time. The analysis that all these different characters are searching for treasure — something very worthwhile, and worth holding onto — is a great one, and something no other blogger has touched on since the show aired on Monday.
Agree with the comments about the military covers – or lack thereof. With every generation of my family having served in some capacity, that kind of error is glaring to this viewer. (it’s also not the first time they’ve goofed on McG’s uniform. In season one Steve had just a few ribbons on his service dress in the pilot, and the next time he wore it at Meka’s funeral, there were twice as many ribbons. It kind of annoyed me). To see the guys in their khakis and everyone else around them in headgear was very odd.
On the other hand, the carry team for the dignified transfer was spot on and the brief ceremony was very moving, especially since we haven’t had a scene like that on Five-0 before.

I have to say I’m finally settling in to this new season. I’m getting used to the new characters, although I’m not sure I’m excited about all of them. Kono’s story line is exciting right now! Can’t wait to see it all play out – hopefully in the next episode! Danny with a new love interest? Well, yeah, a cup of coffee is just a beverage, but I do know real people that visited the altar after meeting over a first cup of coffee! Scott played the goofy guy attempting to ask a girl out on a date for the first time in probably 10 years perfectly!
Having no ties to the military, I missed the significance of the incorrect protocol concerning the head covering, but thanks for keeping us civilians in the loop!

My favorite new characters this season have to be Taylor (still) and Max. I find it VERY suspicious that Joe shows up just as Jenna went back to the mainland, not to mention the fact that he did not turn in the video to DOD as Steve had asked him to.
As for the regular characters. I love that Kono is growing as a character. I hope that my suspicion that she is working undercover to bust the ring that she is supposedly getting into. I will miss Catherine’s sporadic appearances, but there’s always hope. I think it’s FANTASTIC that Danny has moved beyond the indecisive Rachel and decided to see the cute doctor from the museum. But, most importantly, I’m glad the team is still the team, even if it looks like one is becoming wayward (Kono).
I commend the writing team at H50 and the whole cast and crew for such a dynamic season thus far.

Wendie – love and appreciate you translation of “”makamae” which means precious, of great value, something highly prized” – because that’s how much I adore and love all four characters. This week I really had a mixed bag of emotions – firstly so surprised to see Catherine back. It was so sweet of him to pick that white elegant flower which she placed in her hair. You can see by that simple gesture alone with such a short period of time between them that their friendship and time together has grown closer. I sense that he does respect her a great deal more than just the benefits he gets from her. He knows that there isn’t anyone else in the navy that he trusts more. I would like to see them back together again. I know they will be back again.
I should have known that the explanation that Joe left with him about the DOD taking so long to review the tape would not be accepted so its not so surprising that he would ask Catherine for help. Bless her heart for not saying no. She could never say no to him because she’s always cared.
As for Danny finally finding the courage to date is so cute and that he asked Lori a little for some advice – was sweet. The doctor at the museum, was soo cute and the fact that Steve didn’t miss any of the obvious interest from Danny was encouraging since he would encourage Danny to date other women. Nice to know that our navy seal hero has a big heart too, which I’m hoping will belong to Catherine eventually.
This episode reminded us all that treasure goes beyond what’s pricey and valuable when it comes to family and we are constantly reminded by the writers just how important they value family. So I’m surprised that this week’s episode really did go beyond fake hidden gold and money. At the heart of the matter we have missing “grandfather” who’s grandson found beneath the deep blue sea not a shipwreck of sunken treasure. Again the familiar Ohana theme.
In Steve’s case he does have a fear that his father could be “dirty” but he’s hunger for the truth about his father above all else would mean that much more. I was very surprised that Joe didn’t pursue it as vigorously but I also understand that he’s friendship with John is very close and he would help John protect his family but I think Joe would have preferred to uncover the facts first before telling Steve but Steve is not 16 anymore but Wofat’s warning does weigh heavily on Steve’s mind. What will the truth reveal? How painful will it be if Wofat was telling the truth. I don’t want John to be bad – Steve deserves a break. In that final scene with Joe – hope that the truth won’t come back to “bite”!!
The writers are great and we will just have to wait patiently for the truth and as for Kono and her secrets – there will be more for her to hide and as we see her go through a gamut of emotions. We all know that her come back to Five-0 will not be the same as she was in season 1. She will have experiences that could harden her resolve or forever haunt her to see her idealistic dream of being a cop might come at a heavy price. There is such a change in season 2 and there is so much to look forward to.
