Search for missing fisherman covering 2,000 miles of ocean off southern Oahu

Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department personnel are searching for a local fisherman who was reported missing Saturday evening in waters off Hawaii Kai.

The man is identified as Kon Wai Young, 53.

Young went fishing off the southern coast of Oahu Saturday morning in his white and green, 19-foot pleasure boat, according to the Coast Guard. When he failed to return at sunset, Young’s family searched the Maunalua Bay boat ramp in Hawaii Kai where they found his vehicle and boat trailer, the Coast Guard said.

Young was then reported overdue to 911. The search for Young on Saturday included the Honolulu fire department’s Air 1 helicopter, a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and the 110-foot Coast Guard cutter Kiska.

On Sunday, the Coast Guard also launched two HC-130 Hercules airplanes from Air Station Barbers Point. One Hercules subsequently returned while the other continues to search for Young with the Kiska.

HFD’s Air 1 helicopter was searching from the Makapuu lighthouse to Kalaeloa. Coast Guard crews covered a total of 2,101 square miles in 17 hours of searching for Young.
