North Shore surfers can expect waves with faces of 10 to 15 feet Sunday, according to National Weather Service forecasters.
The weather service issued a high surf advisory for north shores or Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Niihau until 6 a.m. Monday because of a rising swell.
Surf on the west shores of Kauai and Niihau will reach advisory heights of 6 to 12 feet, forecasters said. Oahu’s west shore may see 5 to 10 foot surf Sunday.
The waves will produce dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion.
The surf was generated by a weather system in the Gulf of Alaska.
Waves are expected to peak this afternoon and should gradually diminish through Wednesday, forecasters said. A new, smaller northwest swell is expected later in the week.
The south shores may see a series of small swells through the week.
