Hawaii junior center Vander Joaquim was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week today after two effective games on the Rainbow Warriors’ interisland road trip that ended Sunday.

The 6-foot-10 Joaquim posted 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in a 79-66 win over Hawaii-Hilo in Kailua-Kona, then followed up two days later by scoring 16 points with seven rebounds vs. North Carolina A&T in Wailuku, Maui.

Over the two games, Joaquim shot 65 percent (13-for-20) from the field and 90 percent (9-for-10) from the free-throw line.

It is the first career player of the week award for Joaquim.

UH (5-4) opens the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Thursday vs. Auburn.
