Police identify man killed in motorcycle crash
Hawaii County police identified the 24-year-old Laupahoehoe man who died in a motorcycle crash Sunday as Dimitri I. Sheehan.
Hilo police officers said Sheehan was speeding and traveling toward Hilo on Kalanianaole Street near Leileiwi Beach Park shortly after 4 p.m. when he did a “wheelie” on his 2002 Honda motorcycle. Sheehan lost control of the motorcycle, which hit an embankment on the shoulder of the highway and collided with a sign post, ejecting the rider.
Sheehan was wearing a helmet, but suffered severe internal injuries. Emergency crews took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 5:43 p.m.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved. An autopsy will be done to determine cause of death.
This is the 5th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 5 at the same time last year.
