Boy’s rescue from Kalihi Stream prompts weather warning

Honolulu firefighters and HFD’s Air-1 helicopter rescued a 12-year-old boy who had been swept by the raging waters of Kalihi Stream this afternoon.

The boy had been crayfishing with friends when he was swept to the other side of the stream while Oahu is under a flood advisory, said Honolulu Fire Capt. Rick Karasaki.

"The kids are playing, the river rises and they all get away but one boy, who gets pushed by the water to opposite side of the river," Karasaki said. "There was a forest behind him and a raging river in front of him. There was really no place to go and he couldn’t get back to safety."

Firefighters received a call about the boy’s situation at 2:20 p.m. A rescue firefighter grabbed the boy from HFD’s Air-1 helicopter and him back to safety, unharmed, at 3:23 p.m., Karasaki said.

The rescue serves as a reminder over the next several days for people to be aware of rapidly changing weather conditions, Karasaki said.

"This could have been way worse," he said. "The message here is we have to be aware that we have bad weather and need to stay away from rivers or anything that can change quickly. This boy was lucky, very lucky."
