Kailua-Kona man dies of injuries from truck crash

A 58-year-old Kailua-Kona man died Thursday from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash on June 11 off Old Mamalahoa Highway on Hawaii island.

He was identified Monday as William Lawrence.

Kona patrol said the man was working on a 1993 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck when the vehicle began to roll downhill. While attempting to stop the truck from rolling, Lawrence was pulled under the vehicle as it picked up speed, causing him to get caught under the vehicle, which  landed on top of him after striking a rock wall, police said.

Lawrence was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m. on June 14.

Traffic enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Because this death occurred on a private road, it is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.
