Hawaii defensive lineman Calen Friel will miss the 2012 football season after being diagnosed with a fractured fibula, UH head coach Norm Chow confirmed this morning.

Friel suffered the injury during Thursday’s 65-scrimmage at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, where the Warriors are training this week.

Friel, who is 6 feet 2 and 305 pounds, is a 2010 graduate of Kailua High School.

He signed with UH in February 2010, but delayed enrolling until the following January while recovering from a knee injury.

He redshirted in 2011, but was a contender for a spot in the defensive-line rotation this season.

Friel is the third Warrior who will miss the season because of an injury, following receiver Allen Sampson and nickelback Ryan Pasoquen. Sampson and Pasoquen have ACL injuries.
