Hawaii's Emily Hartong puts a kill past Portland State's Kaeli Patton during a women's college volleyball game between the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine and the Portland State Vikings on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

A loss by San Diego — the only team to beat Hawaii this season — helped the Rainbow Wahine move up a spot to No. 6 in the AVCA Coaches Division I Top 25 women’s volleyball poll announced today.

Penn State (9-1) remained No. 1, receiving 53 of 60 first-place votes. USD (8-2), swept by unranked BYU in Provo, Utah, last weekend, dropped to No. 8.

The Toreros’ fall led to the rest of the teams ranked Nos. 3-8 to all move up a place, beginning with Washington (8-0, 5 votes) to No. 2

Florida (11-1) was next at No. 3, followed by USC (10-1, 1 vote), Texas (6-2), Hawaii (11-1) and Stanford (7-2). Nos. 9-13 remained unchanged, starting with No. 9 Minnesota (12-1), followed by Michigan (10-1), UCLA (9-1), Nebraska (8-2) and Ohio State (12-0).

The Rainbow Wahine return to the Stan Sheriff Center Wednesday for an exhibition with Toyota Auto Body of Japan at 7 p.m. Hawaii opens defense of its Big West title Friday with Cal State Fullerton (7-6), also scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
