The Navy is having munitions it dredged from Pearl Harbor destroyed this week.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command said Monday a contractor will destroy the munitions using controlled detonations at a safe location on the Waipio Peninsula.

The detonations will occur on Wednesday and possibly Thursday.

Navy Region Hawaii Environmental Program Director Aaron Poentis says the public won’t be at risk at any time. But he says people along the Pearl Harbor waterfront may hear a series of loud noises.

The Navy says some munitions are believed to still be in the harbor from the 1941 Japanese bombing and the explosion of a landing ship in West Lock in 1944.

Cape Environmental Management Inc. is the contractor performing the controlled detonations.
