The Medical Examiner’s office said the 37-year-old homeless man who was killed in a stairwell in Kailua two weeks ago died of multiple stab wounds.

The victim was officially identified as Scott MacMillan by the Medical Examiner’s office. Friends said that MacMillan was a Kalaheo High School graduate and former chef at Lucy’s Grill & Bar and Island Fusion Catering.

The Medical Examiner’s office classified the death as a homicide.

Homicide detectives have opened a second degree murder investigation into the incident that occurred at 11:35 p.m. Jan. 13 on Uluniu Street.

A witness in the area heard some commotion in a stairwell near Cinnamon’s Restaurant on Uluniu Street. As the witness approached, the suspect fled. The victim was found with multiple injuries and was transported to the hospital where he died.

The suspect is described as a slim Caucasian man, 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 4 inches tall with dark curly hair.

The suspect also may be homeless, police said.

Earlier this week police released security camera video of a possible suspect walking near a stairwell.
