Arkansas visitor drowns off Kauai while snorkeling
A 79-year-old visitor died in Poipu Friday while snorkeling in waters off Lawai Beach Resort.
At about 11:30 a.m., a visitor from Arkansas was snorkeling with a tour group along with a family member. At some point, the family member noticed he wasn’t with the group. They searched and found him further west of the group in a rocky area near the shoreline, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
He was found floating, unresponsive in the water.
Bystanders pulled him to shore and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived, according to a news release from the fire department.
The victim was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identification has not yet been released.
The drowning is Kauai’s first this year.
