Hawaii County police identified the 69-year-old man who sustained fatal injuries in a head-on collision Wednesday in Mountain View as Hubert F. Silva of Pearl City, Oahu.

Silva was driving a Ford four-door sedan when a 1995 Ford pickup truck, heading in the opposite direction and driven by a 23-year-old Keaau man, crossed the center line and crashed into Silva’s car.

The accident occurred on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) at the 13-mile marker.

Silva was pronounced dead 3:01 p.m. at the Hilo Medical Center.

Two others, including Silva’s 64-year-old female passenger, and the pickup truck driver, went to the hospital in stable condition.

Four men in the pickup truck were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.

Police have opened a negligent homicide and negligent injury (two counts) case. The truck driver had no driver’s license and no vehicle insurance.

Anyone with information is asked to call officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119.
