World Series of Poker kicks off in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS >> The 45th Annual World Series of Poker is kicking off with seven weeks of play in Las Vegas.
The 65-event tournament starts Tuesday with a casino employees’ game at the Rio resort. It’s the 10th year the series will be held at the Rio.
An estimated 80,000 players will enter the tournament, and organizers expect they’ll give out more than $200 million in prize money for only the second time in their history.
This year’s tournament includes attention-grabbing events such as a $1 million buy-in game June 29. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The One Drop Foundation, a charity dedicated to providing clean water to developing countries.
The series culminates with the main event starting July 5. The winner is guaranteed at least $10 million in prize money.
